Dr. Tom Novotny is Director of International Programs at the UCSF School of Medicine and Education Coordinator for UCSF Global Health Sciences; his research office is located at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (Kalmanovitz Library 366) and his teaching office at C254 in the School of Medicine. Prior to coming to UCSF in 2002, he served 23 years in the US Public Health Service, retiring as an Assistant Surgeon General and Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Refugee Health in the Department of Health and Human Services. During his career, he served in the National Health Service Corps as a Family Physician in northern California, as an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as CDC liaison to the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health, and as a CDC liaison to the World Bank. At UC Berkeley, he was Assistant Dean for Public Health Practice. Dr. Novotny has worked extensively in tobacco control and in health systems reform, particularly in Eastern Europe. He has published numerous scientific articles on tobacco control and HIV/AIDS, and he has been a contributing author and editor of several Reports of the Surgeon General on Tobacco and Health and HIV policy documents for the World Bank. He is a founding member of the Oxford Health Alliance and the European Commission's Bioethical Implications of Globalization Research Consortium. Principal Research Interests
