Global Health Forum I
Creating Global Markets for Neglected Drugs and Vaccines: A Challenge for Public-Private Partnership Co-sponsored by:
Advances in immunization and health care have occurred in many low- and middle-income countries over the past 30 years. In 1998, for example, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization reported that 74% of the world's children received the World Health Organization's recommended standard immunizations - a dramatic increase since the mid-1970s. Despite this progress, however, the global health divide between the "haves" and "have-nots" continues to grow in the 21st century. In February 2000, IGH and its co-sponsors welcomed 45 representatives from private industry, governments, multilateral and bilateral organizations, as well scientists and health policy researchers, to discuss mechanisms for accelerating the development and delivery of drugs and vaccines that are urgently needed by poorer communities throughout the world.
